The start of the EPR construction at Flamanville 3 is a decisive stage in preparing for the replacement of EDF’s nuclear power plants, as the oldest ones could be decommissioned in around 2020. The commissioning of the Flamanville EPR is set for 2012 and the generation of the first marketable electricity in 2013. The EPR plant will constitute the first version of a new generation of reactors.
Following a public debate whose content was published in a report on 11 May 2006, EDF decided – on 4 May 2006 – to build a third reactor unit on the Flamanville site, opting for EPR technology (European Pressurized Reactor).

Construction site preparatory work began in 2006. The first pouring of concrete for the nuclear block took place on December 3rd, 2007.
