EPR - Flamanville 3
aims and objectives
The EPR – under construction on the Flamanville site.
Why now?
In order to determine the methods for replacing current nuclear power plants around the year 2020, EDF must have a tried and tested reactor model in compliance with the requirements by the ASN (French Nuclear Safety Authority).
The commissioning of the Flamanville EPR is set for 2012 and the generation of the first marketable electricity in 2013.
It takes around 8 years between the decision to implement the project and the commissioning of a nuclear power plant: 3 years for preparation and regulatory procedures and 5 years for actual construction.
