biomass

Biomass is the 2nd leading renewable energy in the world. It is used to produce electricity and heat via the combustion of waste and residue from organic plant or animal matter.

The term biomass covers a wide range of materials: wood, waste from timber transformation industries, agricultural waste (straw, liquid manure, etc.), fermentative fraction of municipal waste and food industries, discharge biogas or methanisation products (liquid manure, treatment sludge, discharges, etc.).

Several EDF Group societies, notably EDF Energies Nouvelles, are involved in this industry. 6 projects (80 MW) using a gasification process are under study and tests on different residues are scheduled in 2006.

reusing of household wastes

In 2006, The TIRU Group’s 21 units (51% EDF-owned) burned 2.8 Mt of household waste, producing
a net 328 GWh of electricity and 2,89 GWh of steam, of which 50% was recognized as “green” energy, thereby avoiding the emission of 165,00 tonnes CO2 and the consumption of 2 million barrels of oil.
